What is upper endoscopy?
An upper endoscopy allows your physician to examine the lining of the upper part of your gastrointestinal tract. This area includes your esophagus, stomach and the first portion of the small intestine, which is called the duodenum.
An upper endoscopy helps your doctor determine the cause of certain symptoms, including upper abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting or trouble swallowing. The upper endoscopy produces more accurate results than an X-ray and is used to diagnosis conditions such as ulcers, tumors and inflammation. When your doctor needs to get a tissue sample for further testing, an upper endoscopy is used to perform a biopsy.
What is colonoscopy?
Colonoscopy is an important tool in the prevention and detection of colon cancer. It can also be used to diagnose symptoms. A colonoscopy allows your doctor to examine the colon lining (large intestine). To perform the colonoscopy, a specially trained physician inserts a flexible tube or colonoscope, the width of a finger, into the anus and slowly advances it into the rectum and colon.

Preparing for the Procedure
Before your procedure, your physician will provide you with complete instructions. Please follow your instructions thoroughly so that your procedure can be performed on schedule and as safely as possible.
General guidelines:
- The night before your procedure, you should not eat or drink (including water) after midnight.
- Bring your driver’s license or photo ID and insurance card.
- When you arrive for your appointment, bring the name and phone number of your regular doctor and pharmacy. Also, bring a list of all of the over-the-counter medicines and supplements you’re taking, as well as all of your prescription drugs. Note how often you take them and the dosage.
- Dress comfortably, wear low heel shoes and minimal makeup.
- Leave your valuables at home.
- Carry a case for your eyeglasses, contacts and/or hearing aid.
After Your Procedure
After your procedure, you will be given discharge directions. Your physician will usually speak to you about your test results the same day as your procedure. In some cases, it make take a few days to get your test results.
- If you had an endoscopy, your throat may feel sore. Your stomach may be bloated due to air entering it during your procedure. Unless your physician advises against it, you can eat after your procedure.
- After a colonoscopy, you may experience mild cramps or bloating. This is caused by air passing into your colon during the colonoscopy. This feeling goes away when you pass gas.
- Colonoscopies rarely cause complications, but call your physician if you experience severe stomach pain, chills or fever or have any excessive rectal bleeding (more than one-half cup).
- You will probably feel tired after your procedure, so plan on resting the remainder of the day.
