Sleep Diagnostics

Do you have difficulty getting to sleep at night or do you wake throughout the night and feel drowsy all day? If so, you’re not alone. About one-third of Americans have sleep disorders. You may think sleeplessness is a normal part of aging or living a stressful modern lifestyle. Left untreated, however, it can leave you feeling perpetually tired, irritable, disoriented and struggling to complete ordinary tasks. Sleep disorders also pose a danger to anyone who operates a car or heavy machine.

Our team of experts includes Board-certified physicians with backgrounds in neurology, pulmonary medicine, psychiatry and polysomnography, who provide diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders.

Baptist Sleep Center was designed for patient comfort. It features:

  • All-private rooms with full baths
  • Flat screen televisions
  • Wi-Fi Internet
  • In-room guest bed
  • Family lounge area
  • Free continental breakfast

Upper Airway Resistance
Loud snoring can indicate that the airway is not completely open. It is a sign of serious breathing problems. In approximately five out of 100 people, noisy snoring is an indicator of sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous health condition. In most cases, loud snorers tend to be middle-aged, overweight men with excessive throat tissue.

Sleep Apnea
Sleep apnea interrupts breathing during sleep, often as much as several hundred times per night. Sleep apnea sufferers may wake with a sore throat and/or headache and may feel sleepy throughout the day. Sleep apnea is associated with atrial fibrillation, a serious disorder that affects heart rhythm.

Insomnia
A chronic difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep is considered insomnia. Insomnia is often connected with menopause, sleep apnea, pain, certain medicines, stress or depression.

Periodic Leg Movement Syndrome (PLMS)
PLMS causes the leg muscles to involuntarily twitch, usually while the person is sleeping. People with periodic leg movement syndrome have trouble getting a deep sleep and feel restless throughout the night. Subsequently, they feel tired and drowsy during the day.

Narcolepsy
Narcolepsy is defined as excessive sleepiness. People with narcolepsy can find themselves suddenly falling asleep during the day while engaged in normal activities. These "sleep attacks" are uncontrollable and can happen at any time.
